Diamond Head and Pali Highway

On the last day of our honeymoon, we had the plan of dring our hot red convertible with fully automatic roof to the famous North Shore via the Pali Highway and Diamond Head.  Diamond Head is a really old crater that has sunk to be not quite as impressive as it would have been when it was formed.  Not to say that it wasn’t a decent fitness exercise walking up to the top!  There were good trail maps which listed all of the scenic points, and explained the history of the Diamond Head.  It was once used extensively for militiary purposes.

Below is a panorama taken when we were most of the way up (click on it to expand).

surfing at Waikiki

On the 9th November, we deliberately planned to have less on the agenda. The key activity for the day, and one of our highlights of the honeymoon was the surfing lesson. Afterwards, we went shopping and bought our first ‘rashies’. It was quite ironic that only near the end of our honeymoon we made the connection that wearing a rashie whilst snorkelling would be quite a sensible idea. After hours of walking around, Tom was very patiently waiting for Morven in the Gucci store, and bored out of his brains was looking inside a lady’s handbag. Lots of people were in the store, when suddenly Tom yelled out “ooooaaahhhhhhHH!!”, held his nose, and then ran out of the store. Tom seemed to have had lots of water go up into his sinus’ when he fell off the surfboard, and when he was looking down at the Gucci handbag the floodgates opened up! After a few more hours of walking around the shops, Morven bought Tom a new alternative watch from the Diesel shop, and Tom bought Morven a silver bracelet from Tiffany’s. Not much honeymoon funds remained after this shopping expedition.

hanauma bay, research pier, lighthouse, blowhole, sunset cruise

On the 8th November, our second to last full day of our honeymoon in Hawaii, we packed a lot of activities into the one day. One blog post alone can not cover everything we did on this day with an adequate number of photos.

It was actually Morven’s idea to get up at the crack of dawn, to drive to Hanauma Bay to go snorkelling.  This place was rated as the best place to go snorkelling on the island of O’ahu, although you have to go super early in order to beat the crowds.  We indeed did get up super early, and were one of the first people there at about 7am.  Hanauma Bay is an old volcano crater that has sunk into the ocean over thousands of years, leaving a broken ring that creates the perfect haven for fish, sea creatures, and coral.  The crater protects the haven from the worst of the ocean currents and wind, also creating perfect snorkelling conditions.
