Wedding planning

It’s been a long time since I’ve been active with ye ol blogging, so I’m not sure if I ever mentioned that Morven and I are getting married on October 23rd 2010! There is a temporary “Our Wedding” page for guests to our wedding – the scope for that page is to inform guests about details they may be interested in, because, well,  you can’t fit everything in on an invitation without it looking more like a ‘document’ than a fridge-worthy invitation.  So we thought we’d mix something old with something new! It’s password protected at the moment, because the invites haven’t been sent out yet, and well, you wouldn’t generally publish your invitation to your wedding in the public domain.

I generally feel the need to write a ‘to-do’ list for the big day, and I hope that if I publish it on our blog then friends/mothers/colleagues may be able to point out things that we may have missed.

We’ve really done quite a lot in preparation for the wedding so far, in no particular order, we’ve:

Blog overhaul

Clearly our blog hasn’t been updated for years now (apart from occasional photo gallery updates).  I’m now updating and overhauling our blog to bring it up to date with the year that it is, which means I’m going to be fiddling around for it a bit and start blogging again! You may have already noticed a new temporary page on the blog.

Our Wedding

Last updated 4th September 2010

Hi guys, thanks for making it to our wedding website! Well done for checking the reverse side and finding this Easter Egg!  We really wanted to add lots more to the invitations, but found a website to be a bit easier for us.  For the few family members that don’t have the internet, we kindly ask that you contact them if there’s anything here you think they should know about.

Accommodation

You should be able to find some cheap hotels on the Adelaide Hotels page of wotif.com, or on www.adelaidehotels.com.au.  If any family would like to nominate a hotel for other family and friends to stay at, we would be delighted to post such suggestions here.

Urrbrae House (ceremony)

Ceremony at 2:00pm.

The official website of Urbrae House contains sub-pages about the house and gardens, and another page with directions, car parking, bus routes from city, and a map.  Have a look where it is in Google Maps if you like.

The ceremony will take place in the rose garden, so please be careful to wear appropriate sun protection or bring your parasol! It may pay to check the weather and UV ratings on the day.  There will be some sunscreen and water available at the ceremony, and the ceremony may occur in a marquee if the weather is too wet or too hot.  A warning to our Scottish guests, we really do have some bad UV here, sorry!

The house is very old, and we have been asked to let our guests know that kids should not be left unattended due to hazards such as old balustrades going up the stairs, and other various fragile bits around the house.

Things to do between the ceremony and reception

Sorry there will be a couple hours between the ceremony and reception, so here are a few ideas:

  • We hope you may enjoy the gardens at Urrbrae House.  It is a large area and hopefully the roses will be in full bloom.  Perhaps bring your camera and take some photos of yourselves – the bride and groom will certainly be having lots of photos taken after the ceremony in the area, so feel free to take your time to do the same!  There is a new outdoor maze made from timber which would be something for the kids.
  • A tour of Urrbrae House may be available after the ceremony – check back here closer to the date.
  • The Edinburgh Hotel is inbetween the ceremony venue and the reception, although walking to or from would not be recommended as despite the distance, it is quite a hilly walk up to Carrick Hill.
  • You *could* go on a scenic walk between Urrbrae House and Carrick Hill.  If enough people express interest in a suggested walking route (keeping in mind it could be at least a 45 minute walk) we might put something up here.  Check back here closer to the date.
  • The house at Carrick Hill will be open for viewing by guests between 5:00pm -  7pm.

Carrick Hill (reception)

Pre-dinner drinks and entrée at 5:30pm.

The official website of Carrick hill has some information about the place, and a page showing where it is in relation to bus stops.  If you’re driving, go up Carrick Hill Drive and you won’t miss the sign to enter the car park.  Follow the walk ways which lead you from the car park to the house and gardens.  You can look at where it is in Google Maps.

Getting home from the reception

If you would like a taxi home from the reception, you’re requested to write your name on a list at the reception.  The staff will handle all taxi bookings as a group and ensure they arrive at the right place (utilising a special arrangement they have with the taxi company).  The MC will make this clear and remind you on the evening.  It is recommended that you don’t book your own taxis due to past problems that Carrick Hill have had.

The dress code

Tom & Morven often find it confusing what the dress code on an invitation means, so we’d like to detail that a little further for you here.

For guys, writing ‘formal’ on your invitation is our way of saying lounge suits with coloured shirts and ties would be spot on, although don’t feel that you need to wear a tie if that’s not your style or if it’s hot!

For ladies, a colourful dress or skirt+top ensemble. A sundress or cocktail length dress would be lovely. Don’t feel you have to wear very formal eveningwear or go and buy a full length dress for the occasion (although i’m all for giving people an excuse to wear a fabulous dress that’s been hanging in your wardrobe!) Also beware due to there being lots of lawn at both venues, if you wear killer stilettos you may experience sinkage!!
